When is fine not fine?

So when is fine, just not fine? I have found myself recently using "fine" as a way of expressing emotion - whether things are good or bad. Does the insinauation come from the tone of the voice or is one meant to know when someone is fine or fine?

  1. I have to say I think that this is a male vs. female split. When a man says he is fine....guess what!...he's fine! When a woman says she is 'fine'.......run and hide as there is normally another meaning.

  2. Tone of voice definitely plays a role in that one. If I say "I'm fine" or "It's fine" with a slight sigh then I'm not. If I say it through gritted teeth I'm REALLY not, and you're probably about to hear about it!!
